Evidence-Based Decision Rules Used at Virginia Mason
In 2005 providers at Virginia Mason began a collaborative effort with employers and health plan leaders to ensure advanced imaging was ordered according to evidence-based decision rules. Virginia Mason developed a method to include these decision rules in provider workflow and ensure appropriate imaging while avoiding waits and delays in patient care and also avoiding the high cost of “add on” commercial imaging management systems.
There has been excellent provider acceptance of this method. Using these decision rules has resulted in sustained reduction in use of advanced imaging for high-volume examinations. The decision rules have been embedded into our computerized radiology scheduling process. The screen shots below are what a Virginia Mason provider sees when ordering advanced imaging. The test cannot be ordered without the provider indicating the evidence-based indication.
